Marilyn Monroe Through the Lens Auction

Julien’s Auctions, the world record-breaking auction house to the stars, has announced Marilyn: Through The Lens, an online auction closing Sunday, March 26th, 2017. The sale will feature over 100 Marilyn Monroe photographs by the most significant photographers of the era who captured the pop culture icon, including George Barris, Andre de Dienes, Douglas Kirkland, Milton Greene, Joseph Jasgur, Bruno Bernard, Richard Avedon and more.

The featured photographs spanning Marilyn’s career include early images of Norma Jean Baker captured by Joseph Jasgur before her transition to Marilyn Monroe. Rare highlights include photographs by Bruce Davidson of Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Misfits, a John Bryson photograph of Marilyn Monroe with her husband Arthur Miller, Nat Dillinger photographs of Marilyn dancing on the set of Let’s Make Love, and Bruno Bernard photographs of Marilyn on the set of Niagara. The sale also features a selection of rare and recognizable movie stills and publicity photos from Marilyn’s most significant acting roles.

Notable portions of the sale include over 25 photographs taken by Douglas Kirkland during the famous “Nude In White Silk Sheet” photoshoot from November 17th, 1961. Kirkland recently memorialized this photoshoot in his book With Marilyn: An Evening 1961 where he quoted "At a certain point, Marilyn herself said, ‘I know what we should do. We should have a bed, and a white silk sheet.” “She insisted it must be silk, and it went from there." The result was a series of photographs showing Marilyn as angelic in a cloud-like atmosphere where her sensuality radiates. The sale also features a collection of over 25 photographs of Marilyn Monroe taken by George Barris just weeks before the legend’s untimely passing. Photographs from several different shoots are highlighted including Marilyn on Santa Monica Beach on July 13th, 1962 and Marilyn in the Hollywood Hills from 1962.

A selection of photographs from historic appearances, including a group of 8 images sold with copyright from Marilyn’s arrival in Korea to support and perform for the US troops abroad, as well as a Robert H. McKinley photograph of Marilyn addressing the troops from atop an army tank in Korea. Also offered are personal and introspective photographs of Marilyn including Eve Arnold’s image of Marilyn Monroe sitting quietly reading a favorite book under a tree outdoors.

Marilyn: Through The Lens, which runs online at www.julienslive.com and closes on Sunday, March 26th, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. PST, will be a remarkable opportunity for collectors to obtain some of the most desired images from the personal life and career of the world’s most legendary screen icon — Marilyn Monroe.

Extended Bidding: This auction will be governed by an "open-ended" 30-minute rule. The auction will go into 30-minute mode when any bid is placed within 30 minutes of the auction closing time. Once in 30-minute mode, every lot in the auction will be extended by an additional 30 minutes each time a new bid is placed. Once 30 minutes has passed without any new bids being placed, the auction will close. This is designed to protect you from losing lots to sniper bidders trying to place bids right before the closing in hopes no one else will have time to bid again. This process may take several hours, so you have the option of leaving an absentee, or maximum, proxy bid. Our system will bid on your behalf incrementally until you have either won the item, or your maximum has been reached.
